Today’s Rehab Demands

Today’s Rehab Demands

Short-term therapy patients today have one goal: to get therapy that works and then go home as soon and as independent as possible. They depend on the expertise of their therapist to accomplish their rehab goal. Testimonials from those who have chosen RESTORE Therapy can be found here: Video testimonials from RESTORE Therapy patients

Also, at most locations, patients can enjoy the privacy of their own room that is located in a dedicated short-term therapy wing. RESTORE Therapy patients often have the option of a private room during their stay so they can concentrate on their recovery. Whether the patient is in need of therapy after an unexpected fall or accident or post-surgery for a hip or knee replacement, RESTORE therapy services offer what short-term therapy patients want today: effective therapy, privacy during their stay and a quick return home.

Enjoy the holidays!

Enjoy the holidays!

The holiday season often loses its sparkle and magic when we spend so much of our time running around trying to find, wrap and deliver the perfect holiday present. Maybe your area of stress comes from planning a large meal or decorating your home. For many of us, by the time the big day arrives, we are often so tired from these efforts that the celebration falls flat. Many seniors living in nursing communities no longer have loved ones who are able to visit them over the holidays. Instead of spending your time at the mall or sitting in traffic, make an effort to visit a senior community and spend time with the residents. Check in with elderly neighbors and wish them happy holiday season. Deliver some cookies or invite them for a holiday meal. A few minutes of your time will make a world of difference to them, and you will find that you, too, will feel more fulfilled.

How do I know if my parents need help?

How do I know if my parents need help?

As people age, their needs and abilities change. Your parents may have trouble getting around the house or difficulty driving. They
may not remember things as easily as they once did. While it is an emotional and difficult decision to begin the process of moving a loved one into a skilled nursing facility, you should start with a simple assessment:

1.) Have they been diagnosed with a chronic disease that is affecting their ability to care for themselves?

Take time this holiday season for what really matters

Take time this holiday season for what really matters

All of us are thankful and blessed to be around our loved ones for the holidays. You may know someone who isn't as fortunate and is alone during this special time of year, particularly the elderly. Make an effort to visit with your elderly neighbors or seek out your local nursing home. Bring them a dinner dish or better yet, invite them over to join in with your family. The time you spend with the elderly will not only bring joy to their lives, but to yours as well. You can make a difference in the happiness of an individual. Simply take the time this holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving!

Managing Multiple Medications

Managing Multiple Medications

What is polypharmacy?
Polypharmacy simply means "many drugs." It generally refers to problems that can occur when patients take a large number of medications. It is of particular concern for the elderly, since they make up about 13 percent of the population but account for using around 30 percent of all prescription drugs. The elderly often experience multiple disease states which require multiple medications, increasing the chances for adverse reactions, drug interactions and self-medication errors. Additionally, more medication side effects can result in even more polypharmacy, since many medications are given to mitigate the side effects of other medications. If you, a parent, or another loved one is taking multiple medications, it is important to be aware of polypharmacy issues.

Several simple steps can be taken to reduce the chances of having problems from polypharmacy. Effective communication with your pharmacist and physician is the first step. Learn as much as you can about each medication you take, both over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. Know what they are prescribed for and what possible side effects you may experience. In general, avoid combination products by asking your pharmacist to help you find a product just for the symptoms you are experiencing, not for every possible symptom.

Boss's Day!

Boss's Day!

October 16th is National Boss' Day, so take a moment to say thank you to your boss or supervisor. Created in 1958 and officially proclaimed in 1962 by Illinois Governor Otto Kerner, the purpose of this holiday was to show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of those in supervisory roles.

Today it is celebrated internationally with small tokens of appreciation amongst employees. If you have someone you admire in the workplace, or wish to acknowledge their efforts, we encourage you to extend your gratitude and let that person know you appreciate them.

October is Physical Therapy Month

October is Physical Therapy Month

In the month of October, we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month. This recognition is an opportunity to learn more about the work provided to the patients and residents in our communities by our dedicated physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.
Physical Therapy is one of the components of our RESTORE Therapy program. Therapists provide rehabilitative therapy after an illness or injury, assisting patients with balance, gait training, strength and endurance. Some of the specialty diagnoses treated with physical therapy include orthopedics, complex neurological cases, cardiac and pulmonary therapy, and specialized therapy for residents with Alzheimer's or dementia.

Fall Prevention

Fall Prevention

Every 18 seconds an adult 65+ ends up in the emergency room as a result of a fall. Are you or someone you love at risk of falling? Assess your risk factors: Do you have impaired vision or hearing? Do you have muscle weakness? Do you have balance problems? Make sure you talk to your doctor about falls so you can determine the cause of your fall. Next, look at your home or living environment. Home is where most falls occur. You can schedule a professional home safety assessment or you can look at the following things in your home:

• Hallways (make sure they are clear and well-lit)
• Floors (remove area or throw rugs that may cause a tripping hazard)
• Bathroom (install handrails, grab bars and non-slip strips in the shower or tub)

Happy Labor Day!

Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day is typically thought of as the time to celebrate the end of summer and usually includes a weekend spent enjoying the company of family and friends. Simply because a person is elderly, does not mean they should spend Labor Day sitting at home lonely. Inviting an elderly person to picnic with you, watch a parade or go for a scenic ride may put a smile on their face.

Caregiving

Caregiving

According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, National Center on Caregiving, nearly 30% of all U.S. households now provide care to an elderly family member, friend or loved one. That's about 44 million Americans providing 37 billion hours of unpaid, "informal" care each year.

As a caregiver, it is important for you to find a balance between giving that care and taking care of your own health. For information on caregiving, contact Children of Aging Parents (CAPS).
