Happy Independence Day! Promoting Senior Independence

Happy Independence Day! Promoting Senior Independence

Independence is a highly-regarded value in the United States. At a personal level, independence stirs our pride and fuels the confidence in our step. Collectively, we tend to feel independence is something to be protected. Our cultural attitudes about independence shape our views about aging.

The elderly wrestle for independence as they recognize the limitations of their bodies. Even sweet, mild-mannered individuals can become agitated and quick-tempered during this process. Rather than give in to tension and frustration with one another, turn to Heritage! Heritage has been caring for seniors since 1962. We value senior independence and offer guidance in senior care, from independent living to skilled nursing services.

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day!

As the summer heat turns up we are afforded yet another opportunity to honor someone special in our lives: our fathers! Many of us have great memories with our fathers. Dad was the first man to meet our needs physically and emotionally. He taught us how to tie our shoes, encouraged us to eat our broccoli and demonstrated the meaning of strength. As you grow up and watch your father age, you may begin to see some changes. The man who cared for you so well now turns to you for special care to meet his unique needs.

Heritage Health has much to offer your dad in his advanced years. One feature our Heritage homes boast is the RESTORE therapy program. Whether your dad needs help retraining his gait, strength to recover from surgery, or coaching to overcoming issues with swallowing, our RESTORE therapists work very hard to get your father back on his feet and independent at home. Our skilled nursing facilities can meet your father's needs for Occupational, Physical and Speech Therapy in an environment tailored to our residents.

Does your father need more than a temporary therapy stay? Heritage can help. Heritage Health provides skilled nursing care for seniors. Our nursing staff is specifically trained to care for seniors in a warm, welcoming environment. Not only do Heritage Health skilled nursing facilities meet clinical needs, but our Activities department plans a wide array of social events to keep your father engaged and connected. Heritage is centered on making your father's end of life experience a positive, fulfilling one.

Happy Memorial Day! Memorializing a Loved One

Happy Memorial Day! Memorializing a Loved One

Many, if not all of us know someone in active military duty, or who is now a Veteran. Memorial Day is the perfect time to reflect on the tremendous acts of bravery and service performed by our military personnel for the sake of our country. Their sacrifice and valor preserves the liberties we celebrate in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. Heritage Health is honored to serve our military veterans!

Origin of Memorial Day

The U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs recognizes May 30, 1868 as the first large Memorial Day observance, held at the Arlington National Cemetery. Children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home decorated graves with flowers while singing hymns. Smaller, local commemoration events for service personnel precede the 1868 ceremony; however, May 30, 1868 was a large event held to memorialize soldiers from both Union and Confederate forces, together. As spring and summer bear bright blossoms and luscious greenery, remember the sea of flowers covering the graves of fallen soldiers at Arlington.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a senior!

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a senior!

St. Patrick's Day has been celebrated since the 17th century, in honor of Ireland's most recognized saint. The shamrock, a long-standing symbol of this holiday, is said to have been used by St. Patrick to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. The green color today associated with March 17th began with the "green harp flag" used by the Irish Catholic Confederation as early as the 1640s. However, the Order of St. Patrick was founded in 1783 and adopted blue as its color, causing blue to be the shade affiliated with this holiday. Blue's tenure as the official color of St. Patrick's Day was short-lived. By 1790 an organization was formed that launched a rebellion against the British ruling class. Green was their color of choice; that choice trickled down to represent many things Irish, including St. Patrick's Day.

Valentine’s Day is a great time to be kissing, which benefits your health & mood!

Valentine’s Day is a great time to be kissing, which benefits your health & mood!
Happy Valentine's Day Eve!

We know kissing as the appropriate ending to a date and a means of connecting with our main squeeze. The collision of lips we often take for granted has a whole lot more bubbling under the surface than what meets the eye.

1. Kissing boosts immunity. A recent study reported in the journal Medical Hypotheses says kissing may increase a woman's immunity from Cytomegalovirus. Cytomegalovirus, contracted through mouth to mouth contact, can cause infant blindness and other birth defects if the mother is a carrier during pregnancy. Otherwise, the bug is relatively harmless in adults. Kissing has long been thought to be a way to pass along bugs and thus strengthen the body's defenses.

2. Kissing helps you pick the best mate. Anthropologist Helen Fisher describes kissing as a "mate assessment tool." Much of the cortex is devoted to picking up sensations from around the lips, cheeks, tongue and nose. Out of 12 cranial nerves, five of them are picking up the data from around the mouth. It is built to pick up the most sensitive feelings—the most intricate tastes and smells and touch and temperature. And when you're kissing somebody, you can really hear them and see them and feel them. So kissing is not just kissing. It is a profound advertisement of who you are, what you want and what you can give.

Enjoy the holidays!

Enjoy the holidays!

The holiday season often loses its sparkle and magic when we spend so much of our time running around trying to find, wrap and deliver the perfect holiday present. Maybe your area of stress comes from planning a large meal or decorating your home. For many of us, by the time the big day arrives, we are often so tired from these efforts that the celebration falls flat. Many seniors living in nursing communities no longer have loved ones who are able to visit them over the holidays. Instead of spending your time at the mall or sitting in traffic, make an effort to visit a senior community and spend time with the residents. Check in with elderly neighbors and wish them happy holiday season. Deliver some cookies or invite them for a holiday meal. A few minutes of your time will make a world of difference to them, and you will find that you, too, will feel more fulfilled.

Take time this holiday season for what really matters

Take time this holiday season for what really matters

All of us are thankful and blessed to be around our loved ones for the holidays. You may know someone who isn't as fortunate and is alone during this special time of year, particularly the elderly. Make an effort to visit with your elderly neighbors or seek out your local nursing home. Bring them a dinner dish or better yet, invite them over to join in with your family. The time you spend with the elderly will not only bring joy to their lives, but to yours as well. You can make a difference in the happiness of an individual. Simply take the time this holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving!

Boss's Day!

Boss's Day!

October 16th is National Boss' Day, so take a moment to say thank you to your boss or supervisor. Created in 1958 and officially proclaimed in 1962 by Illinois Governor Otto Kerner, the purpose of this holiday was to show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of those in supervisory roles.

Today it is celebrated internationally with small tokens of appreciation amongst employees. If you have someone you admire in the workplace, or wish to acknowledge their efforts, we encourage you to extend your gratitude and let that person know you appreciate them.
