Medicare Questions & Answers

Understanding Medicare can be tricky. There are a lot of moving parts and specific qualifications for Medicare as it applies to a skilled nursing facility. It can be overwhelming for many people trying to navigate through the process and understand how Medicare applies to their personal situation.

Here is some basic Medicare information that may help in your understanding:

You could qualify to receive benefits from Medicare Part A in a skilled nursing facility if you meet the following criteria:

  • You have been admitted to the hospital for at least three days (coverage days measured from midnight to midnight)
  • Your stay in a skilled nursing facility begins within 30 days of your discharge from the hospital,following your minimum three-day stay
  • You are medically qualified to receive a skilled service (i.e. physical, occupational or speech therapy)
  • Physicians, nursing and therapy staff will evaluate patients to determine their eligibility for Medicare.This team meets regularly to determine ongoing coverage.

Medicare can help pay for these services:

  • Semi-Private Room
  • All meals, including special diets
  • Rehabilitation services including physical, occupational and speech therapy
  • Nursing care
  • Medications prescribed by a physician
  • Medical supplies
  • Use of items as braces, splints and adaptive equipment
  • What does Medicare coverage pay at a skilled nursing facility?

If the Medicare 30-day window allows or reinstates coverage at a skilled nursing facility, the cost benefit is as follows:

First 20 Days:

  • You pay:$0*
  • Medicare Pays:100%

Next 80 days of continuous post hospital care stay:

  • $164.50/day if you continue to be medically qualified. (as of 1/1/2017)
