Occupational Therapy & Living Skills Retraining

Living Skills Retraining with RESTORE.

Living Skills Retraining is available at Heritage Health skilled nursing facilities throughout Illinois. What is Living Skills Retraining? It is part of our RESTORE Therapy program, occupational therapy to be more specific. This program helps seniors regain the confidence and skills needed to regain their ability to do daily activities on their own following surgery or illness.

Living Skills Retraining therapy programs are crafted for each individual, depending on their needs and personal goals. Daily activities that many of us take for granted can be difficult or even impossible for someone who is recovering from a stroke, shoulder surgery or a hip replacement. With the professional guidance of our RESTORE therapists, seniors can re-learn and practice these skills knowing they are in a controlled environment with support.

Examples of the skills seniors may need to re-learn include:

  • Getting in and out of bed
  • Emptying the dishwasher
  • Unloading laundry from a washer or dryer
  • Putting away groceries
  • Getting in and out of the shower or bath

These may seem like simple tasks, but for someone who suffered a fall or injury that took away their ability to move and do things on their own, it can be a tremendous challenge.

Many of the Heritage Health homes have Living Skills Retraining Studios set up where residents can practice in an environment similar to their own. These mock studios have refrigerators, sinks, cabinets, a dishwasher and laundry. They may also include a bed and often a bathroom for practicing getting on and off the toilet as well as the bath.

The goal of the occupational therapy RESTORE program at Heritage Health is to give patients back not only their skills, but their confidence. Confidence that they can take care of themselves and be independent again is a very powerful thing. Depending on what kind of injury a person has suffered, they may not be able to return to the same level of functioning they had previously. This is why our therapists work with each individual person at their level and with their abilities in mind.

By working with an occupational therapist to relearn these daily activities, seniors have a greater chance of being able to live independently again.

Occupational therapy may also be combined with physical therapy, another component of the RESTORE Therapy program. Physical therapy is also tailored to fit each person's needs and goals, with an interdisciplinary approach to ensure they are receiving the care and guidance they need to be successful.
