What is Respiratory Therapy?

Respiratory Therapy at Heritage Health.

We are all familiar with three very common areas of senior adult rehabilitative therapy: physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. These areas are all vital in helping a person recover from an illness or injury, and are different for everyone depending on their situation. Someone who suffered a stroke may need all three areas of therapy, while someone who had a hip replacement may only need physical therapy.

An area of therapy that is becoming more common is respiratory therapy: treatment plans for patients who may have an acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term) cardiopulmonary dysfunction. Pneumonia would be an example of an acute condition, while emphysema or COPD are chronic conditions that require therapeutic intervention to improve a person's health and quality of life.

For more than two years, Heritage Health has been providing this much needed respiratory therapy to residents in our skilled nursing facilities. A respiratory therapist is available 24/7 in many of our communities.

A respiratory therapist is part of the RESTORE Therapy team. They are specifically trained in pulmonary medicine in order to work therapeutically with people suffering from pulmonary disease.Respiratory Therapy at Heritage Health is part of a comprehensive approach to the health care of our patients. The Respiratory therapy program provided by RESTORE: Heritage Health Therapy helps maintain healthier patients with fewer uninterrupted therapy stays, and also shows a reduction in hospital readmissions which is a key factor in today's healthcare environment.

Respiratory therapists are able to treat both acute and chronic respiratory disorders including bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, COPD and pneumonia. A care plan when working with residents includes:

Individualized patient-focused treatment plans

Evaluation and management of chronic and acute respiratory conditions

  • On-site testing, treatment and monitoring of respiratory disorders

Respiratory therapists evaluate breath sounds, oxygen levels as well as the signs and symptoms of chronic and acute respiratory conditions. Patients are screened upon admission to our skilled nursing facility for clinically-driven treatment plans. Early intervention helps reduce the risk of hospital readmissions and allows a person to continue their therapy without interruptions.

Therapists work closely with the nursing staff to help meet the medical needs of each patient and provide comprehensive care. This interdisciplinary approach further helps reduce the potential for hospital readmissions for patients, by identifying and treating risk factors.

Heritage Health is proud to offer 24/7 Respiratory Therapy as part of our exclusive RESTORE Therapy program.
