Respite Care Services at Heritage Health

Respite Care Services at Heritage Health

Caring for a loved one at home can be a rewarding experience. It can also be exhausting for the caregiver, both mentally and physically. That is why Heritage Health provides Respite Care services at our facilities throughout Illinois.

Respite Care means that a caregiver can admit their loved one to our homes for a short stay, allowing the caregiver time to rest, relax and recharge. Taking time for themselves is an important part of providing care for another person. Without the opportunity to care for themselves, a caregiver can become burned out, frustrated and unable to provide the care their loved one is counting on. Respite Care gives family members the chance to focus on themselves, and take care of things in their own lives that may need attention.

A Heritage Of Care

A Heritage Of Care

A lot can happen in 50 years. Businesses open to great fanfare, and often they close. Friends and neighbors come and go as life takes them on new adventures. But some things remain the same. Some things continue to grow and thrive, and over the course of 50 years, make a substantial impact on their communities like no other. That is the case for Heritage Health facilities throughout the state of Illinois.

In the early 1960s, a new trend in how to care for seniors was sweeping the nation. It was nationally recognized that the practice of converting old homes into nursing centers was not safe or conducive to providing proper care for the elderly. A newly formed company, Bloomington-based Heritage Enterprises, was on the cutting edge of this trend, building nursing facilities that were safer and designed to more appropriately address the needs of seniors. The first Heritage Health (then named Heritage Manor) opened in Bloomington in 1963, and additional Heritage facilities soon opened in Streator, Peru and Gibson City. For 50 years, providing dignified and high quality nursing care has been our mission and life’s work.

Wound Care Services at Heritage Health

Wound Care Services at Heritage Health

Heritage Health skilled nursing facilities exercise comprehensive senior care, meaning Heritage attends to a wide variety of senior health care needs. For some seniors, this comprehensive health care may include wound care.

Wounds develop for a variety of reasons. Seniors who undergo surgery have a higher risk of developing wounds, both at the incision site and internally. While recovering from medical procedures, seniors may rest assured knowing the skilled nursing staff at Heritage Health diligently clean and redress wounds to help them heal, and to prevent them from spreading. Administering wound care at Heritage Health improves patients’ clinical outcomes by effectively managing or eliminating infection, and it reduces the number of hospital trips seniors must take for routine wound care.

Seniors & Depression: Know the Signs

Seniors & Depression: Know the Signs

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates just over 15% of seniors aged 65 and older experience the effects of depression. Age does not predict the onset of depression as not all seniors develop depression; however, depression is more common among seniors who already have other conditions, such as heart disease. Seniors, family members and health care providers alike often attribute the symptoms of depression to aging or to an illness, making it less likely that seniors receive treatment for their depression. Although overlooked, it is possible to alleviate the emotional troubles affecting elderly loved ones.

Identifying depression in senior loved ones starts with familiarizing oneself with their routine, noting changes in behavior or proficiency in completing activities of daily living (ADL). Seniors affected by depression may avoid social environments, eat too much or too little, or experience drastic changes in sleep cycles. Internally seniors may feel hopeless, become irritable or restless, have less energy or lose interest in the activities they once enjoyed. Any one of the symptoms above does not mean a senior has depression, nor is it an exhaustive list of depression symptoms. However, learning a few signs of depression equips friends and family members with knowledge to help seniors in their lives.
